Sun Pavilion Wedding Photographer

Are you looking for a Sun Pavilion Photographer?

The Sun Pavilion in Harrogate is a really lovely choice if you’re after a wedding venue that feels relaxed, characterful and a little bit different. Tucked away in the heart of Harrogate’s Valley Gardens, the Grade II listed pavilion combines its historic Art Deco-style architecture with the surrounding gardens, giving you a lovely mix of elegant indoor spaces and plenty of greenery outside. The building itself dates back to the early 20th century and was designed by Leonard Clarke, with the pavilion and colonnade forming part of the development of Valley Gardens. It was later sensitively restored and reopened in 1998.
One of the nicest things about getting married at The Sun Pavilion is that you can make the most of the gardens as part of the day rather than feeling as though you’re tied to one room. The terrace is particularly useful, with couples having their ceremonies and drinks receptions outside when the weather allows. There’s also a lovely indoor-outdoor feel, so guests can move between the pavilion, terrace and gardens throughout the day. The venue itself already has plenty of character, so you don’t necessarily need to go mad with decoration – one couple who married here commented that they loved how beautiful the venue was without needing to add too much to it.

From a wedding photography point of view, the Valley Gardens are a huge bonus. There are plenty of opportunities for relaxed photographs without having to disappear from your guests for ages. The gardens provide lots of greenery, mature planting, flowers and different little areas to explore, so your photographer can create a variety of photographs rather than simply taking you to one designated spot. The surrounding parkland has also been used for pre-ceremony portraits and first-look photographs, which can work particularly well if you want a few photographs together before the ceremony without spending a large part of the day on formal pictures.

The terrace is another great photographic spot, particularly for ceremonies and drinks receptions. A summer ceremony beneath the pavilion, surrounded by flowers and greenery, gives you a beautiful natural backdrop, while photographs of guests enjoying drinks outside can feel really relaxed and informal. The terrace can also provide some lovely opportunities for group photographs, especially if you want a few family pictures without making the whole process feel too formal.

Inside, the pavilion gives you something completely different. The stained-glass/glass-domed interior and architectural details create a distinctive backdrop for photographs, particularly when you want something a little more atmospheric or when the Yorkshire weather decides not to cooperate. Natural light coming through the large windows and dome can be used for everything from couple portraits to candid photographs of guests enjoying the reception. The combination of the historic building, interesting architectural lines and the gardens immediately outside means there are plenty of options without needing to manufacture photographs.

For couples who prefer natural, documentary-style wedding photography, I think the venue lends itself particularly well to that approach. There are lots of opportunities to photograph people simply enjoying themselves – guests chatting on the terrace, children exploring the gardens, drinks receptions spilling outside and everyone coming together for the meal and evening celebrations. Rather than spending hours posing, you can make use of the surroundings and allow the photographs to happen naturally throughout the day.
And if it does rain? Don’t panic! The pavilion itself provides a really attractive alternative, so you’re not relying entirely on having glorious sunshine. You can still make use of the architectural details, windows, terrace and indoor spaces for your couple portraits, while the gardens can be used whenever there is a break in the weather. In fact, a bit of Yorkshire weather can sometimes make for some of the most atmospheric photographs!
Overall, The Sun Pavilion is one of those venues where the location does a lot of the work for you. You have the beautiful Valley Gardens immediately outside, a characterful historic building, a terrace for outdoor celebrations and plenty of interesting backdrops for photographs. It suits couples who want their wedding photographs to feel colourful, relaxed and full of atmosphere rather than overly staged – and with so many opportunities within a short walk of the pavilion, you can get a lovely variety of photographs without spending half your wedding day away from your guests.
