In the early 1800s, it was transformed under Gothic influences, adding castellations, turrets, and a prominent round tower. The estate has been under the stewardship of the Cunliffe-Lister family since the 1880s, with the current custodians, the 4th Earl and Countess of Swinton, converting it into a luxury hotel in 2001.
