Originally constructed as part of St Mary’s Abbey, The Hospitium served as guest accommodation for visitors, particularly merchants who were not permitted to stay within the abbey itself. Its proximity to the River Ouse and the presence of a water gate suggest it may have also functioned as a warehouse. The stone ground floor, dating back to the 1300s, was designed to withstand frequent flooding, while the timber-framed upper floor provided lodging. Over the centuries, the building has undergone various restorations, notably in 1828 when the Yorkshire Philosophical Society repurposed it to house collections prior to the establishment of the Yorkshire Museum.
