Should I Choose a Studio or Outdoor Family Photoshoot?

Both work brilliantly, it really comes down to what your family enjoys. The studio is warm, controlled and brilliant for younger children who tire quickly or dogs who won’t sit still outdoors. I’ve had toddlers who point-blank refuse to leave the house in October weather settle happily on a studio backdrop within five minutes, because there’s no wind, no cold hands and no waiting around.

Outdoor sessions give you that natural, storytelling feel, think golden hour light through the trees or kids genuinely running around rather than posing. I offer both because families change year to year, what suits a newborn session rarely suits the same family two years later with a toddler in tow.

What Happens During a Family Portrait Session?

Every session lasts up to an hour and starts with a pre-shoot questionnaire so I know your family before you even arrive, who’s shy, who loves the camera, any props or outfits you want included. On the day, I photograph the children together, the children individually, and the whole family together, that mix always ends up being the most requested combination when clients choose their final images.

Afterwards, everything goes into a private online gallery so you can pick your favourites in your own time, no rushed decisions in the studio. I’ve found parents make better choices when they’re not stood there with a toddler on their hip trying to decide on the spot.

How Much Does a Family Photoshoot in York Cost?

Packages start at £250 and go up to £450, depending on how many prints and digital images you want to walk away with. There’s a £50 booking fee to secure your date, which comes off your final package total, so nothing is wasted. Every package includes the shoot itself, a fully edited private gallery, high resolution digital images, and a set of matching luxury prints.

If you’d like wall art or an album on top of your prints, I work with a UK lab that plants a tree for every piece of birch wall art ordered, a small detail I’m genuinely proud of.

What Should My Family Wear for Photos?

Keep it simple and coordinated rather than matching exactly, two or three tones that sit well together photograph far better than everyone in identical outfits. I always tell York families to avoid busy patterns and logos, they date the photos and distract from the faces, which is the whole point of the session.

Comfort matters more than anything else. A child who’s fidgeting in an itchy collar for an hour will show it in every frame, so pick clothes they’re happy sitting still in.
