Family Pictures in York: Should We Choose the Studio or an Outdoor Session?

Both work beautifully, and the right choice comes down to your family. Studio sessions at my home studio near York give you controlled fine art lighting and cosy comfort whatever the weather, while outdoor sessions give everyone space to run, play and simply be together. Sessions last up to an hour, and my portrait packages start at £250.

It is one of the first questions families ask me when they get in touch about family pictures in York: should we come to the studio, or head outside? After years of photographing families across York and North Yorkshire, I can honestly say there is no wrong answer. There is only the answer that suits your children, your style and the season. Here is how I help families decide.

Should we choose the studio or outdoors for our family pictures?

Choose the studio if you want timeless, polished portraits with no weather worries, and choose outdoors if you want relaxed, natural images full of colour and movement. Most of my families know within a minute or two of chatting which one feels right for them.

As a rough guide, I tend to suggest the studio for babies, toddlers and winter bookings, when warmth and a controlled environment make everything easier. Outdoor sessions shine from spring through autumn, especially for energetic children who photograph best when they are free to explore. That said, I have photographed wonderfully giggly studio sessions with five year olds and beautifully calm outdoor shoots with newborns, so these are starting points rather than rules.

One thing I always tell parents: do not base the decision on how you think your children will behave. Some of my most beautifully natural studio portraits have come from the liveliest toddlers, because the studio gives us a small, safe world where their personality becomes the whole picture. Likewise, a shy child often blossoms outdoors with a stick in one hand and the dog at their heels. Whatever your children are like, that is exactly who I want to photograph.

What is a studio family session actually like?

Relaxed, warm and completely unhurried. My studio is a cosy home studio just outside York, with beautiful backdrops and fine art lighting, and there is no audience and no pressure. Children can have a snack, a cuddle or a wriggle whenever they need to.

Before your session you will receive a welcome guide and a pre-shoot questionnaire, so I know your children’s names, ages, favourite things and anything that helps them feel at ease. By the time you walk through the door it feels like visiting a friend. Studio portraits have a timeless quality to them: clean, joyful images that look stunning as wall art and never date.

Where do outdoor family sessions take place around York?

Anywhere you love. I photograph outdoor sessions at favourite family spots within 20 miles of my studio postcode, from woodland walks and riverbanks to open parkland, and I am always happy to suggest locations if you are not sure.

Outdoor sessions have a completely different energy. Children forget the camera is there, parents relax, and we capture the real stuff: the hand holding, the shoulder rides, the laughter mid-walk. Autumn woodland is a particular favourite of mine, with that gorgeous Yorkshire light through the trees, but every season brings something special. And yes, your dog is absolutely welcome. Furry family members count too.

How do I book our family session?

Just get in touch through my contact page and tell me a little about your family. We will have a chat about whether the studio or an outdoor session suits you best, find a date that works, and I will take care of everything else.

After your session, you will receive a private online viewing gallery where you can choose your favourite images in your own time, with no pressure and no hard sell. Many families tell me that sitting down together to look through the gallery is one of their favourite parts of the whole experience.

Diaries fill quickly in autumn and in the run up to Christmas, so if you are thinking about family pictures as gifts or to update the frames on your walls, it is worth booking a few weeks ahead. You can see exactly what is included on my portrait packages page, browse recent sessions in my portrait gallery, or send me a message and we can start planning. I would love to meet you all.
